People with skin of color make up a broad range of ethnic groups and races including Africans, African Americans, Asians, Native Americans, and Hispanics. Examination of population-based statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau demonstrates that ethnic minorities will represent more than one-half of the U.S. population by the year 2050. This shift in demographics calls attention to the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of skin disorders that are more common, unique, or present differently in individuals with skin of color.  Currently, there is a scarcity of research that specifically addresses the structural and functional differences as well as the disparities in disease incidence and prevalence amongst individuals from various ethnic/racial groups. It is this lack of hard research data that the HUSCRI will address.
